<title>SEO: Making Your Page Work in Promote Your Site : Search Engine Optimization</title>

<description>Topic: SEO: Making Your Page Work

Message: blu.raven11 wrote:SEO: Making Your Page WorkSo how do you harness this incredible tool to make your own page's ROI higher? By understanding the search engines and how they work, and by taking steps to ensure your page is optimized for best usability by these engines.First, search engines use text-based algorithms. They send out miniprograms regularly called search engine spiders, robots, or web crawlers that catalog the data contained in web pages – data in the form of text – and use that to determine where to place a page in search engine returns on keywords. So when your potential customer types in &#34;butterfly handkerchief,&#34; the placement and frequency of your keyword phrase &#34;butterfly handkerchief&#34; is one of the main things a search engine pays attention to when deciding where to rank your page. If you are the only &#34;butterfly handkerchief&#34; site that is clearly demonstrating you offer these by placing the keyword phrase in the header, metatags, and text of your page, then you'll get first ranking. If Billy Bob's Hankies does a better job of this, he will get top ranking, bumping you down. But that's not all the search engines look for.**i hope it helps**blu.raven11
SEs will also see the relevancy when the keyword is repeated. Simply stuffing the keywords in the text won't help your site and it may instead be penalized for keyword stuffing.

<description>Topic: How do I check backlinks?

Message: I agree with mib regarding checking of backlinks. You may also use http://www.backlinkwatch.com/index.php to check all your backlinks with additional info like if the links have no follow attribute etc. However, Yahoo offers more reliable results and Google often doesn't show all the backlinks.

<description>Topic: Google PR and Backlinks are Updated..

Message: hi paul.we had good rise right across the board, and some totally unbelievable ones too. we actually have one newis site with only 6 BLs on it, the best of which is from a PR3 blog, showing PR5. and the best bit of it is that Google has currently de-indexed the homepage too.the PR updated is not to be taken for granted nor trusted IMO. (except on our own site where it was way under and should be more of course :)

<title>Static or Dynamic content, does it make any difference? in Promote Your Site : Search Engine Optimization</title>

<description>Topic: Static or Dynamic content, does it make any difference?

Message: Gracia wrote:It's not about whether content is dynamically generated (ie the bot could see this in the response headers where php for example may be reported as the generator of the page). It's simply about load. Hence, if you have both static and dynamic content (as determined by the extension and/or presence of args) the static content will be readily indexed by google, while dynamic content is indexed at a slower rate.Look at the bottom of this forum.. you'll see 'Library'. Googlebot would prefer to chew on that, than this forums dynamic content. Of course, once a site is popular and has a decent PR, the equation does change somewhat..
interesting, hadn't thought about different crawl rates affecting indexing hence performance before. as well as mod rewrite we've found that the performance of dynamic content generally is greatly helped by dynamic generation of an html sitemap using pagetitles as the anchor to the page urls.

<description>Topic: How do I check backlinks?

Message: inside google webmaster tools is by far the most accurate these days, they show over double as links for us as yahoo, and no internal links like yahoo do either, and Google seem to update inside WMT every 2 weeks or so as well. plug in joost de valks firefox extension and you can even see the link PR and anchor text on them.

<title>URL Rewriting On = 404 errors in Promote Your Site : Search Engine Optimization</title>

<description>Topic: URL Rewriting On = 404 errors

Message: Okay I got a little closer to solving the problem.&#160; I recontacted 1and1.com with the discussion of this topic and they sent this back.http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_language &#8230; ess/4.html1and1 had me add these 3 lines of code to the .htaccess fileRewriteEngine on - This was already in my .htaccess file.RewriteBase / - This line made is so the main pages worked; like index.html, userlist.html, search.html RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)\.html$ /index.php?$1 [R,L] - This line of code didn't seems to do anything. So now we got the main dynamic pages to turn into static pages with url rewiting on but the topic pages still give a 404 error and look like this.http://www.ronpaul-wi.net/FREEDOM_OF_SPEECH/f2-mass-media.htmlAny new suggestions?

<description>Topic: URL Rewriting On = 404 errors

Message: Many users using Static URL version because their server is mod_rewrite option enable. If your server does not support Rewrite rule of&#160; .htaccess&#160; Then ask your hosting provider to enable mod_rewrite option . Other wise you have to redirect it to dynamic url .&#160; Click me
Now that the url rewiting is turned &#34;on&#34; the&#160; &#160;'o_rewrite_urls' =&#62; '0', line keeps changing back to&#160; 'o_rewrite_urls' =&#62; '1', in cache/cache_config.php file.
After changing&#160; 'o_rewrite_urls' =&#62; '0' then Go to your login page Like: www.your_forum.com/login.phpLogin as admin then go to :Admin menu &#62; Options &#62; SEO TAB &#62; SET URL Rewriting = &#34;NO&#34;&#160; &#160;[SAVE]

Message: I have the same problem, it works only with rewrite off. I believe there is a problem in .htaccess script. Tried to change it, but so far no luck. By the way, when I update customizable site settings, it for some reason gets back to err 404. I also have 1and1 service, but they saying the problem in the script.
